PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHIC MODELING SPECIALIST - ID# 222349.

School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Department of Oceanography, located at the University of Hawai‘i (UH) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES:  Supports and enhances the research and development activities of the Principal Investigator (PI) through the construction and execution of numerical models that implement complex non-linear hydrodynamic equations of wave evolution in the littoral zone. This includes creation of Digital Elevation Models; developing computational speed enhancements, such as GPU parallelization; conducting complex analyses on model output and physical oceanographic data for model validation and elucidation of oceanic wave dynamics; applying the model for forecasting of future ocean conditions with an emphasis on the nearshore environment of island coasts; and, establishing and maintaining an archival system for the model output. Makes independent assessments of appropriate analysis methodologies of model output and ocean data, generating new analysis code as needed, and assesses the results of the application of those methodologies. Prepares technical reports and manuscripts for publication in the peer-reviewed literature, describing both the scientific underpinning and the operational methodologies of ocean state models and forecast products.  Works under light to moderate supervision to design, write, debug, implement, and validate the computer code for the numerical model, output analysis tools, and output visualization in a variety of third and fourth generation languages, including C++, Python, JavaScript, HTML, MATLAB and UNIX shell scripts.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING

Master’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Physical Oceanography, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, or related physical science or engineering program such as Ocean Engineering.

EXPERIENCE

Three to five (3-5) years of experience in the field of physical oceanography or geophysical fluid dynamics, executing hydrodynamic numerical models and accomplishing analyses (and their interpretation) of model output and oceanographic data.  (PhD from an accredited college or university in Physical Oceanography, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, or closely related field may substitute for three (3) years of experience.).

KNOWLEDGE

Proficient knowledge of, and hands-on familiarity with, one or more numerical model (e.g., BOSZ, XBeach or FUNWAVE models) for simulating surface gravity wave interactions and evolution, especially in nearshore environments. Strong knowledge of ways to maximize numerical model computational efficiency using parallel computation techniques (e.g., GPU parallelization; Message Passing Interface (MPI); and, Open Multi-Processing (OpenMP)). Strong knowledge of standard coding practices to maximize program efficiency (UNIX shell scripting, and programming languages, including C, Python, PHP (Personal Home Page Tools), JavaScript, HTML, and MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory). Thorough knowledge of the UNIX computer operating system. Considerable knowledge of methodologies (including the numerical coding practices thereof) for analyses of physical oceanographic data, including for example auto- and cross-spectral analysis, bi-spectral analysis, application of wavelets to spectral analysis, computation of confidence intervals, calculation of kinetic and potential energies, etc.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions in English. Ability to design, code, debug, and verify programs starting from complex mathematical formulae and utilizing existing library functions.  Ability to evaluate existing numerical model output and data analysis procedures and to suggest and implement (through computer code generation) new procedures.  Ability to evaluate and report results from data analyses and numerical simulations objectively.  Ability to carry to fruition multiple assignments in parallel.  Ability to maintain a high degree of independence, self-motivation, organization, and detail orientation.  Ability to prepare written progress reports.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Job requires concentrated mental effort and ability to work with computer screen, keyboard and pointing devices for extended periods of time.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT
