School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Department of Oceanography, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES:  Responsible for acquiring, editing, processing, describing, scientifically analyzing, displaying and disseminating on the Internet physical oceanographic data from a long-duration coastal physical oceanography program. Prepares, programs, calibrates and maintains oceanographic instruments for periodic deployments in the ocean per manufacturers’ specifications. Designs, organizes, and executes instrument deployments and recoveries nearshore. The employee will use existing software that may or may not need to be modified/debugged by employee; new software to be designed by employee based on mathematical formulae provided by Principal Investigator (PI); new software designed solely by the employee. The employee is not expected to be able to fully interpret results of statistical descriptions or scientific analyses executed.  Maintains Web-based analysis and forecast products. Responsible for the hardware and software maintenance of several UNIX-based workstations connected to an existing network.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING

Master’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Physical Oceanography or a related physical science or engineering program such as Ocean Engineering, or a Master’s Degree in Computer Science with additional course work in ocean-related sciences.

EXPERIENCE

Three to five (3-5) years of experience in the design and use of software tools for the manipulation, statistical analysis, graphical display and web-based dissemination of large multidimensional data sets, using either common programming languages (e.g., Python, C, HTML, etc.) or major mathematical function libraries (e.g., Python, MATLAB, MATHEMATICA). Experience working with the UNIX operating system.

KNOWLEDGE

Thorough knowledge of UNIX commands and shell scripting (C, PERL, Python, Korn or Bourne). Knowledge of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Considerable knowledge of statistical analysis and time series data analysis methods, as well as data display methods and techniques, including Web page design.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to design, code, debug, and verify programs starting from complex mathematical formulae and utilizing existing library functions. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.  Ability to carry to fruition multiple assignments in parallel. Ability to maintain a high degree of self-motivation, organization and detail orientation. Ability to prepare written progress reports.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Job requires concentrated mental effort and ability to work with computer screen, keyboard and pointing devices. Job requires working with small tools. Job requires working on small boats nearshore .

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with and/or interest in marine science, particularly physical oceanography. Knowledge of time series analysis techniques. Some knowledge of data acquisition systems and hardware interfaces with computers. Some familiarity with Microsoft PC operating systems. Some familiarity with seagoing operations, and some desire to occasionally work at sea near the shore for short periods of time.
