The Opportunity

Post-Doctoral researcher is needed to lead research on a high-profile NOAA funded project to integrate stream/river temperature models into the National Water Model. Responsibilities will be to 1) develop and conduct independent research related to stream temperature modeling and hydrologic disturbances, and 2) assist in managing a research group of graduate students.  Candidates should have expertise in machine learning, spatial data analysis, remote sensing, hydrologic and/or stream temperature modeling.  The initial contract will be for 12 months with the option to renew for an additional 12 months pending satisfactory research progress. Candidates should have completed PhD by August 1, 2022.  Position will be available starting September 1st, 2022.

Responsibilities

  • Lead independent research activities in collaboration with faculty advisor
  • Participate in a weekly 1-hour research group meeting
  • Meet weekly with graduate students to provide mentoring and research guidance
  • Submit minimum of 2 proposals each year
  • Submit minimum of 2 research papers each year
  • Revise and resubmit other papers as needed
  • Conduct preliminary reviews of student research products: abstracts, posters, proposals, defense presentations, thesis, technical papers
  • Assist graduate students in submitting their work for publication, as appropriate
  • Present findings at regional and national conferences
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

  • PhD in civil or environmental engineering, hydrology, watershed/earth science, data science or related field
  • Expertise in machine learning, spatial data analysis, and hydrologic modeling (particularly related to stream/river temperature)
  • Experience working with the National Water Model is preferred
  • Experience mentoring of graduate or undergraduates preferred
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in civil or environmental engineering, hydrology, urban planning, watershed/earth science, data science, or related field by August 1st, 2022
  • Expertise in machine learning, spatial data analysis, and hydrologic modeling (particularly related to stream/river temperature)
  • Experience working with the National Water Model is preferred
  • Experience mentoring of graduate or undergraduates preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Programming, machine learning and statistical analysis
  • Hydrologic and/or stormwater modeling (particularly related to stream/river temperature)
  • GIS, Google Earth Engine (GEE), or other spatial data platforms
  • Remote sensing and satellite applications
  • Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students

$50,000 - $63,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
