Professor and Department Chair - Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
General Summary of Position:
The Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for the position of professor and department chair. We invite candidates with strong academic leadership experience and a vision to support continued growth of the department and address our mission “to excel in education and research in Earth system science and human-environmental interactions.” The applicant must have an outstanding record of publications and funded research, demonstrated success of teaching, and interpersonal skills that will foster the development of department faculty and students and enhance the visibility of the department both internally and externally. The successful applicant is expected to develop and maintain an externally funded research program. Candidates whose expertise can contribute to the department’s strengths in environmental, Earth, and atmospheric science will be considered. Candidates with expertise in one of the following fields are particularly encouraged to apply: water/air/soil analysis and protection, coupled human-natural systems, environmental science and policy, and sustainability.

The Department of Environmental, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences:
The Department of Environmental, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences has 10 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, one full-time teaching faculty member, and several adjunct instructors serving nearly 150 BS students and 30 MS and PhD students. It offers BS degrees in Environmental Science (traditional and Geoscience options) and Atmospheric Science/Meteorology and a new BA degree in Environmental Science – Sustainability option. At the graduate level, it offers a PhD program in Earth Systems Science and an MS in Environmental Studies with options in Atmospheric Science and Geoscience. The department has experienced substantial growth with several recent faculty hires and a 50% increase in undergraduate enrollments and over 75% increase in graduate enrollment over the last five years. The department takes a leadership role in the Climate Change Initiative and the Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy. The Climate Change Initiative is a cross-disciplinary Research Center that brings together more than 35 faculty members from 18 academic departments committed to addressing climate change in their scholarly, instructional, and engagement work (https://www.uml.edu/research/climate-change/). The Rist Institute is the University’s center for hands-on research in sustainability, climate change, and renewable energy (https://www.uml.edu/sustainability/). Its goal is to create scalable blueprints for sustainability in communities throughout our region and across the world. Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Applicants must have demonstrated strong academic management and leadership skills and success in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level
- The applicant must have an outstanding record of publications and funded research which meets the requirements for appointment as a tenured Full Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell
- Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in environmental or natural science, geoscience, atmospheric science, sustainability, or a related discipline
- Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
