ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN WATER QUALITY MODELING

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) is hiring a faculty cluster in Water Research to complement existing expertise in this general area as well as in water chemistry, water resources management, applied hydrology and aquatic ecology. The new cluster will be seeded with tenure-track positions in water quality modeling (Department of Environmental Resources Engineering), aquatic biochemistry (Department of Chemistry), applied hydrology (Department of Sustainable Resource Management), water policy and governance (Department of Environmental Studies) and Aquatic Molecular and Cellular Biology (Department of Environmental Biology).   Full details on the cluster hire and all positions are available at www.esf.edu/HR/clusterhire.

Here we invite applications for an academic-year (10 month) tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Resources Engineering with research and teaching interests in the area of water quality modeling.  This is broadly defined as modeling the interaction of physical, chemical, biological, and ecological processes as related to streams, rivers, and lakes. The focus may be oriented to watershed or aquatic processes, and the ideal candidate will make use of advanced modeling techniques or the novel integration of sensing with modeling to gain new fundamental insights that can lead to restoration and improved management of water resources.  Of particular interest is research addressing critical environmental problems such as the prediction of algal blooms, effects of climate change or land use change on water quality, or optimization of watershed best management practices. Applicants should demonstrate a capacity to engage in multidisciplinary projects working with engineers, hydrologists, chemists, biologists, ecologists, or policy specialists.  

Responsibilities:   The workload for this position is 40% teaching, 50% research, and 10% service. The candidate would be expected to teach at least one undergraduate core class as well as upper level/graduate classes in their specialty area. Service responsibilities include advising undergraduate students, mentoring graduate students at the masters and doctoral levels, and participating in department, college and professional service.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in engineering, earth science, or a related discipline
  • Strong record of publication
  • Evidence of potential to develop an externally funded research program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring
  • A strong interest in collaborative research across disciplines, especially within the Water Sciences
  • The possibility to become a licensed professional (e.g. P.E., C.G.W.P.)
  • Demonstrated experience fostering an inclusive environment, working with people from diverse backgrounds, and incorporating diverse perspectives in research
