Postdoctoral Position in Ocean Biogeochemical Modeling at the University of New Hampshire

The Letscher lab at the University of New Hampshire is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Ocean Biogeochemical Modeling, working on the representation of marine biogeochemistry fluxes within coupled physical-biogeochemical-ecosystem models of the marine system. The position is located at the University of New Hampshire’s main campus in Durham, NH within the Ocean Process Analysis Laboratory (OPAL).

The position will focus on the development of marine organic matter and associated greenhouse gas cycling within the marine biogeochemistry/ecosystem component (MARBL) of two U.S. funded Earth System Models, NSF’s the Community Earth System Model (CESM) and DOE’s the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). The position may also include building representation of these marine biogeochemical fluxes within inverse (data assimilation) models of ocean biogeochemistry. We are seeking a self-motivated and independent candidate that will also be offered the opportunity to develop projects of mutual interest.

Duties will include: (1) setting up and running simulations of the ocean/ice-only configuration CESM and E3SM models on existing UNH supercomputing infrastructure, (2) scripting of routines for analyzing model output and evaluate model performance using existing observational data, (3) scripting of inverse models of ocean biogeochemistry within Matlab® software, and (4) publishing research in peer-reviewed journals and presenting results at national conferences.

The initial appointment will be for one year with renewal for an additional year based on satisfactory performance. Minimum qualifications to include a Ph.D. degree in the general field of oceanography with programming experience for large data array analysis (e.g. Matlab, Python, etc.). Desired qualifications to include expertise in ocean biogeochemistry and/or numerical modeling with Earth System Models. Candidates should submit a CV and introductory email to Dr. Robert Letscher (robert.letscher@unh.edu). Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
