The Department of Earth Sciences in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), and the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), both at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM), Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, invite applications for a joint, tenure-track faculty position in hydrogeology, at the rank of Assistant  Professor.  We seek a talented scientist eager to leverage our unique Pacific Island location to conduct studies of both regional and global Earth Science topics. The successful applicant will hold a doctorate in the appropriate field at the time of appointment and is expected to establish an externally funded and nationally recognized research program, enthusiastically contribute to graduate and undergraduate advising and teaching, and carry out professional service activities. Willingness to engage with faculty, staff, and students in a collaborative fashion that supports Indigenous values and perspectives, as well as diversity and inclusivity are essential.

We specifically seek an Earth scientist whose research heavily emphasizes groundwater modeling, and who will build an externally funded research program that will attract high-caliber PhD- and MS-level graduate students. The candidate should have a strong interest in field-based groundwater model development and applications aimed at improving the understanding of hydrogeological processes. Experience in field data collection is desirable. Possible modeling-related research includes, but is not limited to, assessing subsurface variability at a range of spatial and temporal scales, integrated hydrogeological and geophysical modeling, integrated groundwater - surface water systems, coastal and terrestrial impacts of climate change, shoreline and estuarine/subsurface processes, non-aqueous phase liquid transport, contamination by organic and inorganic chemicals, and coupled hydrological-microbial processes. Demonstrated potential and/or ability in collaborative team-based and trans-disciplinary research is also required. Of particular need is the ability to address urgent water problems of the State of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Region, as well as Federal regulations regarding managing water.  Thus, in addition to seeking Federal funds, the incumbent should cooperate with and seek support from State and local agencies, including the Department of Health, Department of Land and Natural Resources, County Water Supply Departments, East-West Center, and the USGS Pacific Islands Water Science Center.

The Department of Earth Sciences ( http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/earthsciences/ ) is one of thirteen research units and four academic departments within the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) ( https://www.soest.hawaii.edu/soestwp/ ), a world-class research and academic institution focused on informing solutions to some of the world’s most vexing problems. The Department has 22 tenured or tenure-track faculty as well as 30 additional cooperating graduate faculty in the Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology ( https://www.higp.hawaii.edu/ ).  Together these faculty instruct and advise approximately 50 graduate students and 80 undergraduate majors.

The WRRC ( wrrc.hawaii.edu ) is an Organized Research Unit of the University of Hawai‘i whose mission is to promote understanding of critical state and regional water resource management and policy issues through research, community outreach, and public education. The center has eight tenured or tenure-track faculty, 24 affiliate research faculty, four permanent staff members, and nine extramurally-supported researchers. WRRC supports water-research across the campus and serves as the coordinating entity for water research and community engagement by faculty, staff, and students from all relevant disciplines.

SOEST, WRRC, and the University in general, comprise a diverse and dynamic core and affiliate faculty with research expertise in hydrology, coastal processes, climate science, geochemistry, water quality and  pollution, social sciences, tropical agriculture, geography, economics, computer sciences, Hawaiian studies, resource management, and community engagement.  The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa is one of 115 Research 1 Universities in the country, and is one of only a handful of land-, sea-, space-, and sun-grant institutions. It is a world leader in Earth and environmental sciences, consistently ranked among the top 15 universities internationally.  UH Mānoa is proud of its diverse, multiethnic heritage. Located in Hawai‘i’s capital city of Honolulu at the crossroads of the Pacific, the campus is home to students, faculty and staff from Hawai‘i, the U.S. mainland, and more than 100 countries around the world. UH Mānoa’s programs often rank among the nation’s most diverse. We seek applicants who will embrace this diversity, and further welcome candidates whose professional or personal perspectives enrich the communities within the University, SOEST, the Department of Earth Sciences, and WRRC, as well as the public we serve.

Apply online at https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/hawaiiedu. Search for the position number 83213, 88648 and click on the “Apply” (top right corner of the screen). In particular, your approach to inclusion of Indigenous perspectives is encouraged.

Review and evaluation of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Preference will be given to applications received on or prior to August 1, 2022, but applications received after this date may also be considered.
