Job Details

NUMERICAL MODELING ASSOCIATE RESEARCHER – ID# 222504.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Hawaiʻi Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa (UHM).  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $6,500/Mon.

DUTIES:  Works with a multi-disciplinary group to develop single- and multi-phase numerical models of groundwater and Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL)/contaminant flow in confined and unconfined aquifers in ocean island environments that are at risk of contamination to their primary drinking water supplies.Works collaboratively with the research team to develop: 1) develop a density dependent numerical groundwater flow model for the South Oahu Basal Aquifer (SOBA); 2) a comprehensive conceptual site model for the Moanalua/Red-Hill/Halawa Region and, 3) using the SOBA numerical model to establish boundary conditions combined with geostatistical methods as well as processes imitating methods, develops and executes a computer modeling approach  that will: assess LNAPL and dissolved phase transport through the vadose zone to the local water table; spread of the LNAPL plume and dissolved phase contamination on and within the saturated zone; and transport of the associated contaminant plume under both natural and pumping-induced groundwater flow conditions.  Analyzes and interprets geologic, geophysical, and hydrologic data using appropriate state of the art geostatistical and structure imitating modeling techniques toward the development of single- and multi-phase models of LNAPL and water transport through the vadose and saturated zones of the South Oahu Basal Aquifer (SOBA) using numerical modeling codes such as SUTRA, SEAWATS, or TOUGH2.  Actively contributes to development of proposals for additional work in Hawai’i and the Pacific Islands. Reports on projects and prepares research publications on completed projects and works with research team on development of proposals for follow-on research.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING

PhD from an accredited college or university in Geology/Hydrogeology, Earth Science, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience in numerical modeling of groundwater and contaminant flow using state of the art modeling platforms.

KNOWLEDGE

State of the art knowledge of groundwater modeling platforms.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to translate geologic conceptual site model to numerical groundwater flow model using geostatistical analysis and structure and process imitating methods. Ability to manage resources, schedules, and personnel to effectively and efficiently complete research projects. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with the application of modern numerical modeling methods to the analysis of groundwater, LNAPL, and contaminant transport in volcanic/fractured crystalline rock/karst environments; be familiar with various methods of transforming geologic and structural hydraulic characteristics  into fate and transport models at contaminated sites.  Experience with numerical modeling codes such as SUTRA, SEAWATS, or TOUGH2. Experience with hydrogeophysical research and leadership of hydrologic research projects.  Experience working in a collaborative environment in an institution of higher education or similar organization.
