Physics Institute, University of Bern, invites applications for the position of


Full or Associate Professor in Climate and Environmental Physics

in the field of Global Climate System Dynamics (100%)

(Successor Prof. Dr. Stocker, starting date 01.08.2024)

Candidates will develop an internationally recognized research program to study past and future global climate system changes using coupled climate models to gain an improved process understanding of the Earth system and are expected to represent the field of climate science nationally and internationally. Potential topics include the physical understanding of Earth system processes, potential tipping points and extreme events in the climate system, and the coupling of different climate system components (for example ocean/ice/atmosphere).

Applicants will have an outstanding track record in the field of Earth system modeling/climate dynamics, in attracting external funding and strong leadership skills. Future close collaboration is expected with the other groups at CEP working on atmospheric and biogeochemical modeling as well as ice core and atmospheric trace gas and climate observations. Active collaboration with other research groups at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (OCCR) is also expected.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in physics or a related field. Candidates are committed to excellence in teaching and are expected to represent the entire field of physics at the undergraduate level and the specific field of climate and environmental physics at the graduate level. Courses at the undergraduate level are taught in German and sufficient proficiency is expected within two years of the appointment.
