Description: The School of Earth Sciences (SES) and Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at the Ohio State University maintain the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of tropical and mid-latitude ice cores, collected over several decades, many from glaciers where a viable record is no longer obtainable due to melting. These records provide the only direct pre-historic measurements of atmospheric composition outside the poles, enabling deep insights into changes in atmospheric circulation, chemistry, biochemistry, and local and global ecological changes since the last ice age through the current anthropogenic warming.
We seek a scientist who is accomplished in advanced data analytical approaches to integrate ice core records with palaeoclimatological, historical and/or modern, interdisciplinary observations, such as satellite data. Desirable new research foci include: atmospheric dynamics and modeling with an emphasis on polar-tropical teleconnections over multi-decadal time scales; glacier dynamics to constrain ice core time scales and better understand ice-related geohazards; atmospheric chemistry with an emphasis on the impacts of natural and anthropogenic air pollution on Earth’s ecosystems; and reconstruction of the evolutionary history of Earth’s microbial populations as preserved over thousands of years in glacier ice. In addition, the successful hire will be expected to assist and, in time, potentially lead in long-term stewardship of the ice core collection. As a faculty member in SES, the candidate will also be expected to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses related to their field of expertise. Remote field experience and demonstrated ability to collaborate nationally and internationally are desirable.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a well-established researcher with a consistent track record of scholarship and external funding, as well as experience leading large and complex laboratory operations. Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research and collaboration is desirable. A commitment to teaching is required. Demonstrated experience in inclusive pedagogy and in mentoring members of underrepresented groups is desirable.
