Assistant Professor of Environmental and Ocean Sciences with Specialization in Applied GIS

The University of San Diego (USD) Department of Environmental and Ocean Sciences (EOSC) invites applications for an interdisciplinary scholar who uses geospatial analysis (GIS) within the field of environmental or ocean sciences with a program of scholarship that is connected to one of the following three cluster hire themes:  1) Climate Change and Environmental Justice, 2) Borders and Social Justice, or 3) Technology & the Human Experiences. This position is part of a cross-disciplinary cluster hire to build a cohort of diverse scholars. More information about the cluster themes can be found here.

This faculty member should have GIS expertise complementary with the existing EOSC faculty and will be expected to regularly teach the first semester GIS course, Introduction to Maps and Spatial Data Analysis (EOSC 314), and the second semester GIS course, Geographic Information Systems (EOSC 415), on a rotational basis with other faculty members, at least one other 100 or 200 level course in EOSC (http://www.sandiego.edu/cas/environmental-ocean-sciences/program/?area=courses), and to develop an upper-level course in their area of specialty which incorporates advanced spatial analysis in GIS. This faculty member is also expected to actively participate in the future GIS Certificate program (currently under development).

The position carries a 3-3 teaching load (with lectures and labs counting each separately for one class) with the possibility to reduce the load by one course with internal or external grant funding. Candidates will be expected to develop a program of scholarship that incorporates undergraduates and potentially MS students in their research. Candidates will also participate in service that fits their interests. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
