Research Assistant / Postdoctoral Researcher - Arctic Data Assimilation

We seek a Research Assistant or a Postdoctoral Fellow to support a modeling project related to the impact of climate change on arctic terrestrial ecosystems. The selected candidate will develop a spatial data-assimilation framework for the Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (DVM-DOS-TEM) to improve predictions of carbon-climate feedbacks as a result of permafrost thawing. This position requires a mathematical background, computer coding experience, and the ability to work independently. Development of the data assimilation framework will require knowledge of Bayesian statistics and big data filtering methods (e.g., Kalman filter). The selected candidate will work within a highly collaborative team of Arctic modelers, scientists, policy experts, and communications specialists for the Permafrost Pathways project.
● Develop coding infrastructure for spatial data assimilation within a terrestrial ecosystem model, including the integration of large geospatial data sets.
● Process and analyze multi-temporal and multi-dimensional process model output.
● Execute a variety of complex, non-routine research procedures with little supervision.
● Schedule own work and lead project implementation with minimal supervision.
● Assist in project planning and contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and manuscript preparation.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
● M.S. or Ph.D. in applied mathematics, statistics, earth system sciences, or a related discipline.
● Experience with multi-dimensional process model output, advanced statistical techniques, and manipulating large data sets.
● Knowledge of Bayesian statics, data assimilation, and filtering techniques.
● Familiarity with Linux/Unix systems and console commands.
● Advanced computational and programming skills.
● Excellent written and oral communication skills.
● Ability to work independently and in a highly collaborative environment.
● M.S. or Ph.D. thesis on data assimilation.
● Several years of experience with scientific code development.

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The annual salary range is dependent on qualifications/experience. This is a two-year, fixed-term appointment with the possibility to extend based on funding and performance. Woodwell offers a generous benefits package and work life balance
