Position Summary:
Plastic particles are an emerging contaminant in terrestrial ecosystems. But compared to marine ecosystems, little is known about fate and transport of micro- and nanoplastics in terrestrial systems. The objectives of this project are to (1) understand the creation of secondary micro- and nanoplastics during weathering and determine intrinsic biodegradability, (2) determine the role of weathering on the surface and colloidal properties of micro- and nanoplastics, and (3) identify the fundamental mechanisms involved in transport of micro- and nanoplastics in unsaturated porous media and soils.
Responsibilities will include:
• Conducting field and laboratory experiments on plastic weathering
• Colloid and surface characterization of plastic particles
• Write and review peer-reviewed publications
Required Qualifications:
• BS or MS in Soil Science, Hydrology, Geosciences, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or closely related field
• Strong quantitative skills
Preferred Qualifications:
• Strong analytical and laboratory skills
• Familiarity with R or other programming language
• Experience in colloid science
Start Date: January 1, 2023
Benefits:
• Tuition
• Graduate student stipend plus health insurance
• Opportunity to carry out a portion of the research at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
How to apply: (Please submit to Dr. Markus Flury, flury@wsu.edu)
