The Department of Geosciences at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM) has multiple open graduate student positions (MS or PhD), starting in the Spring or Fall 2023 semesters. Field of study is open, and the department has expertise in paleomagnetism, hydrogeology, volcanology, sedimentology, structural geology, mineralogy, and paleontology/paleobiology.

Successful applicants will receive full tuition remission, salary, and benefits including access to health insurance. Salary support is in the form of a teaching assistantship (TA), research assistantship (RA), or fellowship. Continuing support is guaranteed to MS students for 4 semesters and PhD students for 8 semesters, provided satisfactory degree progress and sufficient enrollment in courses requiring TAs.

UWM is located on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan in southeastern Wisconsin. Our graduates go on to rewarding careers in a wide range of sectors, and our new Geosciences career-readiness program will help get you there. UWM and the Department of Geosciences are committed to equity, diversity, and equal opportunity. We strongly encourage applications from underrepresented minority students, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, nontraditional students, and other underrepresented groups in geosciences. UWM is also a military-friendly university, serving more veterans than any other Wisconsin university.

The priority deadline for Spring admission is September 15.  For Fall admission, apply by December 15 to receive full consideration for Graduate Fellowships or by January 15 for other types of funding (TA and RA).
