Description

The College of Engineering and Mines at the University of North Dakota (UND) invites applications for a faculty position in the Harold Hamm School of Geology and Geological Engineering (HHSGGE), beginning Fall 2023, contingent on the availability of funding. Salary is commensurate with experience. We are seeking an established geoscientist to fill an Assistant Professor, 9-month faculty position in Vertebrate Paleontology with a special focus on fossils and the evolution of dinosaurs/mammals in ND. This position is tenure-track.

The UND HHSGGE offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Geology, Geological Engineering, Earth Science, and Environmental Geoscience. In addition to an introductory course in paleontology, we expect the successful candidate to lead a successful program involving the educating and funding of graduate students and working closely with internal and external stakeholders. This position is expected to collaborate extensively with the North Dakota Geological Survey and other state entities, and contribute to exposing the public to the fascinating world of dinosaurs and early mammals found in the state.

Paleontology is an integrated part of an education in geology and geological engineering, and ND would need a vertebrate paleontologist (not present at any other institution of higher education in the state) that advertises and scientifically describes the abundant vertebrate material found in this part of the country. The successful candidate is expected to undertake research and teaching as well as outreach to the people of ND in the field of Vertebrate Paleontology of dinosaurs and (early) mammals. By doing so he/she will integrate university teaching with everyday life, especially for inhabitants of western ND (where the dinosaur fossils are abundant). At the same time, the successful candidate is expected to publish his/her research in scientifically prominent journals and thereby raise the visibility of UND as a scientific organization soon to become an R1 school.

Position Benefits

Benefits include single or family health care coverage (UND pays the full premium), basic life insurance, employee assistance program, retirement plans with generous employer contributions, and 10 paid holidays.

Optional benefits include supplemental life, dental, vision, flexible spending account, supplemental retirement plans.

UND also offers an employee tuition waiver and a variety of professional development opportunities.
