The School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma (http://meteorology.ou.edu) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor focused on Data Analytics.  

The Mission of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences is to provide a world-class academic experience that promotes convergent and innovative education and research at the intersections of weather, climate, and sustainability. To fulfill our mission, we are dedicated to preparing students for successful careers in the private sector, academia, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.  

Data Analytics. We seek an innovative scholar to contribute to research on the applications of data analytics to weather and climate. The ideal candidate will use data analytics approaches, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), to improve the prediction and/or understanding of weather and climate, especially for time scales ranging from subhourly through subseasonal to seasonal. This position offers collaborative potential with the new OU Data Science Institute for Societal Challenges. Examples of expertise sought include, but are not limited to: i) The development and use of analytics techniques to process big data and model outputs, ii) Advancing the design of hybrid AI/numerical models, and iii) Furthering the use of data analytics techniques to improve our understanding and ability to predict high-impact and severe weather, which are increasing with climate change.

This position is embedded within a multi-year College-level effort to become a global leader in Earth System Predictions and Community Resilience Research. This is one of seven positions in a successful strategic cluster hire in High Impact and Severe Weather research that began in 2021. School of Meteorology: The ideal candidate will have the potential to contribute to research and educational activities in our intellectually diverse department. Applicants must possess a PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, or a related discipline at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a vigorous, independent research program, to teach in the School of Meteorology (the standard load is 1-1), and to contribute to mentorship and advisement of students in our undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

The School of Meteorology is currently composed of 28 faculty and has a long and distinguished history of excellence in various sub-fields of meteorology. Our vision, i.e., to “Develop the School into a globally-engaged, student-centered atmospheric science program to advance the Nation’s Weather, Water, and Climate enterprise, by leveraging our strengths in research, education, and community engagement” is articulated in the recently developed Strategic Plan (SP2030).
