The Geology Department at Western Washington University (WWU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position specializing in Structural Geology to begin Fall 2023. We seek individuals who will establish a vigorous research program, are enthusiastic about teaching, will involve undergraduate and Masters-level students in their research, and will work to improve diversity, equity, and inclusivity through their teaching, research, and service efforts.

The ideal candidate will complement our existing teaching and research strengths in tectonics, petrology, geomorphology, and geophysics by developing new courses and research avenues in structural geology. We broadly seek individuals who will apply field-based observations and analytical techniques to understand the structural and tectonic evolution of the Earth’s continental crust and lithosphere. Areas of interest include but are not limited to the structural analysis and evolution of mountain belts, the kinematics and rheology of faults or shear zones, and the timescales and rates of continental deformation. Primary teaching responsibilities include structural geology, field mapping and methods (field camp), and advanced courses in structural geology and tectonics, as well as introductory / physical geology courses.

About the Geology Department: The Geology Department at WWU is committed to excellence in both teaching and research.  Our goal is to offer the highest possible quality education in the geological sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The mission of our department is to serve three main populations: graduate students, undergraduate geology majors, and undergraduates from other departments for their general education courses. For all of these students we strive to create excitement about discovery and the process of geologic inquiry.  We want to develop in all students an appreciation of how geological processes affect the earth and society so that they will be environmentally responsible, scientifically literate citizens. We strive to produce majors with an interdisciplinary content background in geology and the physical sciences who are competent in the field, who can work collaboratively, conduct original research, and effectively communicate their results. We have 18 faculty and 5 staff, who serve 150 undergraduate and 30 graduate student majors, offering teaching and research in an array of geoscience fields including structural geology and tectonics, surficial processes and geomorphology, hydrogeology and engineering geology, igneous petrology and volcanology, metamorphic petrology, sedimentology and stratigraphy, organic and stable isotope geochemistry, marine geology, paleoclimate, science education, and planetary geology and geophysics. Several of our faculty hold joint appointments or affiliations in Science Education, Material Science, Marine and Coastal Science, and Physics and Astronomy programs at WWU.

About the University: Western Washington University, with over 16,000 students in seven colleges and the graduate school, is nationally recognized for its educational programs, students and faculty. The campus is located in Bellingham, Washington, a coastal community of 90,000 overlooking Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands and the North Cascades Mountain range. The city lies 90 miles north of Seattle and 60 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia. Western is the highest-ranking public, master's-granting university in the Pacific Northwest, according to the 2022 U.S. News & World Report rankings.
