Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Earth Science

The Department of Environment and Sustainability at Ohio Wesleyan University is a growing, interdivisional program with majors in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, and Geography at a nationally-ranked undergraduate liberal arts institution. We seek a broadly trained individual with an earth sciences background and teaching and research abilities in hydrology and/or soils with an interest in contributing to applied work in environmental/natural resource management. We strongly encourage candidates who can address social and environmental justice as part of their teaching and research to apply. Interdisciplinarity, flexibility, and creativity in teaching, research, and service are important. Candidates should address how they will integrate OWU’s signature program, the OWU Connection, in their research and teaching. The OWU Connection emphasizes experiential learning such as funded, student theory-into-practice research, internships, creative projects, service learning, and travel learning. Candidates should explain how they will help build a diverse and inclusive campus community as part of their teaching and research. Finally, candidates should describe their ideas for innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to the challenges facing higher education in the coming decades.

Responsibilities:

Position responsibilities include three courses per semester, including a broad introductory earth science course. The successful faculty candidate will also develop new courses drawing on their expertise in soils, hydrology, and/or environmental management that are interdisciplinary, flexible, and DEI-focused, such as (for example) Indigenous and Western Science: Water, Soil and Environment, or The Mississippi River Watershed: Past and Present. Faculty at OWU are given significant autonomy in the development of their courses. Resources are provided for course technology and fieldwork, and professional funds for travel and research.

This job is part of a cluster of positions with which Ohio Wesleyan seeks to further diversify its curriculum and faculty. Minimum Qualifications:

• The successful candidate must have a Ph.D., or be on track to complete their Ph.D., by August 2023, in an earth science-related field, including geography, geoscience, hydrology.
• Proven record of successful teaching experience and an active research agenda.
