Assistant Professor of Geosciences: Geographic Information Sciences

Job Details

This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position in the Department of Geosciences at Fort Lewis College to begin in late August 2023. The primary responsibility of this position is to teach undergraduate courses in Geographic Information Science (GIS), with secondary responsibilities that include supervising/mentoring student research projects and supporting the curriculum of our Certificate Program in GIS.

Major Responsibilities

  • Teach at the undergraduate level with a teaching load of 12 credit hours per academic year
  • Demonstrate a focus on teaching at the undergraduate level, including courses such as Introduction to GIS, Intermediate/Advanced GIS, Programming/Web Mapping, and Remote Sensing 
  • Supervise and mentor independent study projects and internships within the GIS Certificate Program and more broadly within the Geosciences Department 
  • Advise students regarding future career and academic opportunities 
  • Be active in collaborative scholarship (traditional or in relation to teaching) with undergraduate students and professional colleagues 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed Ph.D. by late August, 2023 in Physical Geography, Geoscience, Environmental Science, Geographic Information Systems/Science, or a closely-related discipline
  • Experience and competence with modern geospatial software, particularly ESRI’s ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap)
  • Experience using geospatial technologies as applied to the physical and natural sciences
  • Ability to teach introductory- and advanced-level GIS, programming, and remote sensing courses
  • Experience and strong interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities 

Preferred Qualifications

  • We are particularly interested in candidates with a research specialization in climate science, broadly defined (including, but not limed to climate change, the cryosphere, and/or extreme events), but we welcome applications from all candidates with backgrounds relevant to our Department
  • Experience in field-based geospatial data collection with applicability in the Southwestern US
  • Competency in alternative or open-source software/programming languages for spatial data analysis (e.g.., QGIS, GRASS, Python, R, etc.) 
  • Participate in departmental and college-wide governance and professional service 
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508 
  • Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards

Compensation

The salary is $54,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package. The anticipated start date is in August 2023.
