The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science (EOAS) at the Florida State University (FSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Radar and Mesoscale/Synoptic Meteorology. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in radar meteorology and will use radars to address fundamental research questions on the physics and/or dynamics of Mesoscale/Synoptic Meteorology and their interactions with larger and/or smaller scale phenomena. Applications from those skilled in observational analyses, measurements, modeling, theory and/or interdisciplinary investigations will be particularly welcomed, as is the use of any types of radars (i.e., ground-based, airborne, space-borne).
The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain a vigorous externally funded research program in their area of interest and to contribute to both the undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the department. This includes contributing to teaching undergraduate courses in synoptic and mesoscale meteorology as well as teaching/developing other undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate's area of research specialization. We are especially interested in candidates whose research, teaching, or service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education and the scientific community. Candidates must hold a Doctoral degree or the highest degree appropriate in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, or a related field.
EOAS, housed in a new building (2020) with state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories, has 35+ faculty members, and 135 graduate students, a diverse student population, and offers undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography, and Environmental Sciences. FSU also hosts a local High Performance Computing Center. The successful candidate can expect collaborations with faculty in the Meteorology curricular group (a group which has hired 3 faculty in the last 5 years) and the diverse group of faculty across EOAS (a total of 9 new hires in the last 5 years). In addition to collaborations within Meteorology and other faculty within EOAS, the successful candidate can expect collaborations with colleagues in groups such as the Center for Ocean-Atmosphere Prediction Studies, the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute, the FSU Marine and Coastal Laboratory, and the Departments of Mathematics and Scientific Computing. The Tallahassee Forecast Office of the National Weather Service is located adjacent to the EOAS building.
