A doctoral research assistantship is available starting Spring 2023 for a PhD student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Utah Water Research Laboratory at Utah State University in support of the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH). This position will focus on developing next-generation Hydrologic Information Systems that better enable the day-to-day data collection and management activities associated with operating continuous hydrology and water quality monitoring sites along with sharing data using standards-based web service interfaces and data encodings.

Specific areas of study for this position may include the following topics related to environmental sensor data:

  • Development of efficient systems for interfacing with sensors and data logging systems
  • Data models and efficient storage technologies for data management
  • Implementation of standards-based web service interfaces and data encodings for sharing data
  • Manual and automated quality control of environmental sensor data
  • Interfacing with the HydroShare repository for data archival
  • Data visualization and analysis tools

This assistantship includes a monthly stipend and fully paid tuition and fees and will be awarded through the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Utah Water Research Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Jeffery Horsburgh. Applicants must apply for admission through the USU graduate school http://www.usu.edu/graduateschool/. Prospective students should have a background in engineering, hydrology, water resources, computer science, or a closely related field. Priority will be given to candidates with experience or strong interest in computer programming; data collection using hydrologic and water quality sensors and data logging technologies; and/or cyberinfrastructure development. For more information on the application process, contact Dr. Jeff Horsburgh at jeff.horsburgh@usu.edu. In addition to the graduate school application procedure, interested students should email a current curriculum vitae and one page statement of research interests to jeff.horsburgh@usu.edu as soon as possible.
