Open Rank Faculty Position in Critical Elements and Minerals Geoscience

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University invites applications from all areas of geoscience working on fundamental Earth science questions related to the properties and processes of critical element sources, migration, concentration, and economic viability using field, analytical, experimental, and modeling approaches. Modern technological society depends on the sustainable extraction of critical elements hosted in geological materials and we face an unprecedented demand for these materials for the renewable energy transition, battery production, and global infrastructure development. We seek applicants in research areas that include, but are not limited to, the critical mineral record of deep fluids and hydrothermal circulation, economic geology and mineral deposit formation, low-grade and non-traditional ore deposits, and mechanisms for carbon storage with critical element recovery potential. The position is open to all ranks (tenured/tenure-track) and will be housed in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in the College of Engineering, with linkages to the Johnson School of Business, the Atkinson Center for Sustainability, Cornell Tech, and a wide range of multidisciplinary opportunities and top analytical facilities at EAS and across the university (Cornell High Energy Synchrotron SourceCornell Center for Material ResearchCornell NanoScale Science and Technology Facility).

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field of study by the time the position starts. We plan to review applications beginning November 15, for an August 2023 start. Please apply via Academic Jobs Online (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22853). To apply, please submit (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a complete list of publications highlighting the applicant’s three most relevant for this search, (4) contact information for three references, (5) a research statement of up to 3 pages, including the applicant’s current research and future research plans at Cornell, (6) a teaching statement with potential contributions to our undergraduate and graduate curricula, and (7) a statement of contribution to diversity, equity and inclusion describing how the applicant currently or potentially promotes diversity, equity and inclusion through their teaching, research, and service and how they would continue this work at Cornell. Please see for guidance: https://facultydevelopment.cornell.edu/information-for-faculty-candidates/

EAS and the College of Engineering at Cornell embrace diversity and seek candidates who will contribute to a climate that welcomes and supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. As part of the university's comprehensive vaccination program, all Cornell employees are required to have and provide proof of an FDA-or WHO-authorized or approved COVID-19 primary vaccination or have obtained a university-approved disability/medical or religious exemption, regardless of their role and work location.

New hires are required to provide documentation showing primary vaccination status (that is, completion of two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or one shot of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson) before their first day of work. If a new hire's vaccination is not complete or information is not received by their start date, the first day of work will be delayed. It is possible in some cases that an offer of employment may be withdrawn.
