The School of Natural Resources (SNR) at the University of Missouri (MU) along with MU Extension is seeking a tenured/tenure-track faculty position in Climate Science, who will serve also as the Director of the Missouri Climate Center.  With this position, MU will better occupy a place among a select group of universities that boast a truly integrated and multidisciplinary approach to extension, research, and actionable scholarship in the field of climate science. This position will strengthen established research and extension programs, collaborate with other established MU research centers to garner major grants, form innovative new partnerships with private and public partners, and contribute toward improving grant and publication metrics considered in the Association of American Universities' (AAU) rankings. This position will complement and collaborate with faculty in SNR; the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR); MU Extension Field Specialists across the state and other colleges and departments across the MU campus. Collaborative opportunities also exist with the MU Water Center, MU Center for Agroforestry, and the Interdisciplinary Plant Group (IPG).

The Director of the Missouri Climate Center (MCC; climate.missouri.edu) is a 9-month tenure-track appointment in extension and research. Faculty Rank (Assistant or Associate) and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The successful candidate will develop an exciting, high-impact, nationally/internationally recognized, extension and externally-funded research program that complements institutional strengths in climate and environmental sciences.

The MCC is a trusted source for climate information in the region and is widely recognized for its excellence. It is the responsibility of the Director to provide leadership in guiding the Center's climate research efforts, and the procurement of external funding. The MCC is provided office and laboratory space by the University but is dependent upon extramural funding for operating dollars. The Center's research programs are based largely on data provided by the Missouri Mesonet.  Tools developed by or with the Center include the Design Storm Alert System, the Temperature Inversion Potential tool, and seasonal agricultural outlooks, to cite a few.

The successful candidate will also oversee the MU Extension operations of the Missouri Climate Center. Duties include but are not limited to: serve as the Missouri State Climatologist; oversee the Missouri Mesonet (with over 40 weather/climate stations); serve as a weather and climate expert for inclusion in reports and news articles; serve on special boards and panels dealing with adverse weather conditions (e.g., drought, flooding); participate in weekly teleconferences with MU Extension Field Specialists during the growing season; cooperate with National Weather Service and other state climatologists to provide regional and local data; prepare special summaries of significant weather and climate events; prepare press releases or materials for press releases concerning noteworthy weather events.

About MCC:  The Missouri Climate Center was established in 1995, and is an integrated unit for atmospheric and climate science research and extension in the University of Missouri's College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, the School of Natural Resources, and the School’s Atmospheric Science Program.  The primary functions of the Center are to: 1) develop advanced databases containing atmospheric conditions, climate variations, and ecosystem changes in the State of Missouri; 2) oversee the operation of the Missouri Mesonet; 3) produce value-added products from available weather data and disseminate the products to statewide users; 4) continuously monitor and document climate variations, and; 5) apply atmospheric research tools to assess and predict climate variability and its effects on regional atmospheric environment and ecosystem response. The Center provides needed information for effective planning and management of state agriculture, industry, and natural resources.

Minimum Qualifications - A Ph.D. is required in Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, Hydrology or a closely related area at the time of application.

Candidates will be evaluated on:  postdoctoral experience; a strong record of peer-reviewed publications; extension or outreach experience; and a level of grantsmanship that reflects high productivity relative to the applicant’s career stage. Administrative experience is highly desirable along with demonstrated leadership abilities.

Starting date:  August 1, 2023, or as negotiated.
