The Department of Atmospheric Science at the University of Wyoming (UW) seeks to fill two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions beginning August 2023. One of these two positions has a research focus on hydroclimate modelling. The successful candidate for this position is expected to have a strong record of publications and promise of external funding success in modelling the role of precipitation in the climate system. This position is one of five faculty positions from departments across campus that will form the core of the new Center for Regional Earth Systems Modeling, an interdisciplinary center focused on water availability in the interior western United States in a changing climate. The Center will be created as part of WY-ACT (Wyoming Anticipating Climate Transitions). This position offers tremendous opportunities to build new and strengthen existing collaborations with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and to leverage Wyoming’s privileged access to the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputer Facility (NWSC).

The academic appointment and tenure home will be in the Department of Atmospheric Science, with an opportunity for joint appointment with the UW School of Computing. The successful candidate is expected to advise MS and PhD students and post-doctoral scholars and teach select courses in atmospheric science. The Department of Atmospheric Science is a graduate-only program. It currently has five faculty members, several research scientists, and is on a growth trajectory. The selected faculty will have the opportunity to use and collaborate with users of several facilities including the department-owned and NSF-funded next-generation King Air research aircraft together with associated cloud and precipitation instrumentation, a ground-based mobile lab, and the NWSC through a direct UW allocation of NWSC resources. The University has created a new School of Computing that focuses on the application of computing in and across all disciplines. The School will be fundamentally interdisciplinary, using translational research to leverage new and critical computing technologies and approaches for advancing grand challenge problems in science and society.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in atmospheric science or other relevant discipline and record of scholarship appropriate for the rank of assistant professor;
  • Expertise in hydroclimate modeling, with a focus on how atmospheric processes at any scale control water resources;
  • Interest and/or expertise in teaching at the graduate level, especially in areas such as numerical weather prediction, atmospheric dynamics, and cloud and precipitation systems.

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest and/or experience in water in the Intermountain West;
  • Strong interest in collaborating with faculty in the Department of Atmospheric Science;
  • Interest and/or experience in interdisciplinary research;
  • Interest and/or expertise in teaching at the undergraduate graduate level;
  • Interest and/or expertise in high-performance computing applications to study the climate system.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Why consider the opportunity?

  • Participation in WY-ACT: the position provides a unique opportunity to participate in an interdisciplinary project that addresses critical water issues in the Intermountain West. This is a strategically important project for UW.
  • Computational resources: a significant fraction of the NWSC resources is reserved for UW researchers.
  • Lab space: the Center for Regional Earth Systems Modeling is slated to be housed in a new building on the UW campus.
  • Location. Laramie is a great place to live and work. Laramie boasts a low cost of living, low property taxes, and no personal state income tax. The area offers incredible outdoor recreational opportunities, an eclectic downtown area, and a great public school system.
  • Leadership. Led by President Edward Seidel, UW is undergoing significant reorganization initiatives designed to position it for leadership, including in computational research, with the creation of a new School of Computing

How to apply

Applications should include a cover letter with contact information for three references, a CV, a research statement, a teaching statement, and a DEI statement.
