The Department of Scientific Computing at Florida State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position for nine-month appointments beginning August 2023. Academic year requirements include teaching, research, and service.


The Department of Scientific Computing is a self-contained university unit, whose faculty members consist of biologists, computer scientists, engineers, geneticists, material scientists, mathematicians, and physicists. Such a varied representation among disciplines creates rich opportunities for research and collaboration within the Department and with other research centers across Florida State University. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in computational science that provide students with innovative, hands-on, multi-disciplinary training.


Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to develop an interdisciplinary research group in data assimilation or optimal control in application to problems in natural sciences and/or engineering, secure external funding, participate and organize scientific initiatives and consortia, and develop and teach new courses in scientific computing and relevant application areas.


Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will have earned a Doctoral degree or the highest degree appropriate from an accredited institution in the fields of Computational Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Statistics, or related field with a demonstrated record of achievement in academic research and teaching. The candidate should possess the knowledge necessary to develop and teach courses among the areas of optimization, data assimilation, and differential equations.


Strongly Preferred Qualifications
The candidate will have demonstrated a record of applied interdisciplinary research in scientific computing. The candidate should have expertise in some combination of the following: optimal control, differential equations, data analytics, and computer modeling at scale. Experience in development of external funding programs and an established network of collaborators would be a plus.
