We solicit applications for a postdoctoral position of up to 5 years at University of Illinois Chicago and Argonne National Lab in the field of ecohydrology, ecophysiology or biometeorology with an emphasis on urban systems.
The individual selected will work alongside faculty members and senior research staff in Environmental and Biological Sciences at UIC, Argonne National Lab, and other partnering institutions to study how urban land use influences climate at the neighborhood to city-scale. The project is part of the DOE-funded Community Research On Climate and Urban Science (CROCUS) that endeavors to develop new observational and modeling tools to support decision-making to reduce climate risks - particularly for the most vulnerable populations - across the city of Chicago. The advertised position involves: (1) extensive field work at sites through the Chicago area, (2) working with stakeholders and community partners to understand local climate risks across neighborhoods in Chicago and (3) data analysis of remote sensing and model outputs. The candidate should be familiar with setting up and maintaining field sites and instrumentation, and be enthusiastic about mentoring and community engagement.
The position requires a doctorate degree in ecology, Earth or environmental sciences, or a related field; strong quantitative skills; experience with field equipment and data loggers, some experience in urban systems and a valid driver’s license. Candidates are expected to have strong curiosity, self-motivation and capacity for independent work, with demonstrated writing and oral communication skills. Knowledge of coding in Python, R or Matlab are a plus but preference will be given to candidates with strong records of community engagement and urban ecology.
