Job Details

The Department of Geosciences at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Climate Science with a start date of August 2023.  We seek candidates with strong potential to conduct transformative externally funded research within their area of specialization.  Priority will be given to applicants applying local and regional climate modeling to the effects of climate change on human-environmental interactions, terrestrial and/or coastal ecosystems, or Earth systems complementing existing faculty and research programs in the department and Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.

Florida Atlantic University (www.fau.edu), with its main campus in Boca Raton and its six satellite campuses, is in the middle of the South Florida metropolitan area and is surrounded by world-famous beaches, the Atlantic Ocean, the reef tract and other coastal ecosystems, and the Greater Everglades.  FAU has a culture of research that fosters innovation and collaboration internally as well as with local, national, and international partners, e.g., the U.S. National Park Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, the South Florida Water Management District, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Palm Beach County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management.  Successful candidates will be expected to build collaborations with existing staff in the Department of Geosciences, the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, Center for Environmental Studies, Environmental Science Program, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, and external research entities.  Further information about the Department of Geosciences, its faculty, and research strengths is available at http://www.geosciences.fau.edu/.

The successful candidate will supervise undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. student research and will fill existing curricular needs in the department by teaching both undergraduate and graduate level courses.  We are particularly interested in applicants who can contribute substantively to the new Climate Change Focus in the B.S. in Geosciences.  We also seek a colleague who will engage in service within the University, the profession, and the South Florida community.

Diversity and Inclusion are core values of the Department of Geosciences. We believe that the educational environment is enhanced when diverse groups of people with diverse ideas come together to learn. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a demonstrated commitment to diversity of thought in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.

Informal inquiries can be addressed to: Dr. Scott Markwith, Chair of the Search Committee, (smarkwit@fau.edu ). Review of applications will begin January 15, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.

This position is part of a major strategic hiring initiative in the Charles Schmidt College of Science that will build on our areas of strength in Environment, Health, and Data Science. More information on our hiring initiative can be found at: https://www.fau.edu/science-hiring/.
