Assistant Professor, Carbonate Sedimentology

Job Summary
The Water School at Florida Gulf Coast University (https://www.fgcu.edu/thewaterschool/) is hiring 9 faculty for Fall 2023 across a range of disciplines related to water and the environment. The Water School is an interdisciplinary enterprise that brings together faculty from five colleges and schools representing 15 departments to focus on the environmental, economic, and human dimensions of coastal resilience, ecosystem integrity, health and wellbeing, and restoration and remediation.

This appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine and Earth Sciences.

The Water School encourages nominations for and applications from qualified individuals with research and teaching interests in Carbonate Sedimentology for an Assistant Professor position starting Fall 2023. We seek applicants with one or more of the following skills and experiences: (1) work in modern tropical carbonate environments; (2) ability to inform paleoenvironmental history through application of modern sedimentologic processes; (3) interests in working in Southern Florida, the Bahamas, or the Caribbean; and (4) relevance to paleo- and future climatic change.

The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty in The Water School and be willing to work with and/or inform decision makers. The new faculty member will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels as applicable; courses may include Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, Sedimentology/ Stratigraphy, and a study abroad Field Experience. The successful candidate will be involved in course and curriculum development; conduct research; participate in university committees and initiatives; and perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

• Develop and teach assigned courses: prepare syllabi and instruction materials, coordinate lectures, evaluate students, and maintain highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
• Develop and maintain an independent and productive research program that also involves students.
• Mentor students, as appropriate, in research.
• Actively work with local communities, as appropriate, to engage them in issues related to carbonate sedimentology and related coastal processes.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Geology from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.
• ABD considered if a degree is conferred by August 7, 2023. If the successful candidate is ABD, the appointment will be made at a Lecturer level on a fixed contract.
• Must meet university criteria for appointment to the level of Assistant Professor.

• Interdisciplinary teaching and research perspective with well-defined research goals. Willingness to engage in service opportunities commensurate with career maturity.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Familiarity with and use of diverse and innovative teaching approaches to engage students and ensure student learning.
• Demonstrated development and use of skills appropriate to the discipline.
• Ability to conduct independent research and involve students in research.
• Ability to mentor students in research with the students' learning and training in mind.
• Ability to contribute effectively and collegially to a positive, dynamic, civil, and inclusive learning and working environment.
