Job Details

Applications are invited for a Data Scientist, to work with an interdisciplinary, cross-department team at the University of Waterloo, with a flexible start date. The successful candidate will work jointly with Professor Basu’s Ecohydrology Lab and Professor Layton’s Computational Modelling Lab. The Basu group and the Layton group are dynamic and vibrant, with a proven track record of outstanding achievements. The applicant will also work with Research Assistant Professor Juliane Mai at the University of Waterloo on portal development and innovations. The position will support two large projects titled: (1) Solutionscapes: Designing Climate and Water Smart Solutions in Complex Working Landscapes, and (2) From Data to Knowledge: Designing User-Driven Water Quality and Nutrient Loading Observatories across the Great Lakes Basin. Based on interest, there would also be flexibility in exploring additional topics in water and/or health related areas.

 

Primary duties and potential projects: 

  • Develop machine learning models for various water quality datasets and process model outputs at regional and global scales
  • Develop portals for easy access to model inputs and outputs
  • Manage computational resources of the labs

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • BSc. in data science, computer science, mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline; a MSc. would be a plus
  • Experience in managing and curating large data sets
  • Demonstrated programming and software development skills (MATLAB, Python, R etc.)

 

Additional Qualifications that are desirable but not required: 

  • Geospatial expertise, knowledge in remote sensing techniques
  • Work experience in data science or computer science a plus
  • Knowledge in water/water quality
  • Experience in website and/or portal creation
  • Experience in developing and implementing machine learning algorithms and software packages

  • Ability to work efficiently and prioritize multiple project tasks
  • Ability to clearly explain design concepts, theory of operation, and instructions to researchers in the water quality sciences

  • Curiosity about science, health and disease 
  • Passion about learning and professional growth 
  • Willingness to work hard and strong drive to excel
