Job Details

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University recognizes the importance of understanding the natural sources of carbon to the atmosphere and sinks in land and ocean with rapid climatic and ecosystem shifts.  We seek to fill an assistant to associate-level Lamont Research Professor position in the field of carbon science and management, including marine, coastal and terrestrial carbon.  The scope of potential fields of research is broad, including chemical/biological oceanography, carbon fluxes between the atmosphere and ocean and/or land, soil science, coastal blue carbon, field and experimental biogeochemistry and forest carbon cycling. We recognize the importance of Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) of various carbon management methods.  We especially welcome applicants working with observational, experimental, and modeling tools including development of instrumentation to assess, evaluate and eventually monitor the potential successes as well as downstream pitfalls of various approaches in enhancing carbon sequestration. The selection committee is interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their excellence in research, teaching, and service, to the diversity and excellence of our academic community. The successful candidate will join a world-class community of researchers with opportunities for transdisciplinary collaborations with other scholars in fields such as economics and engineering at the Columbia Climate School and be expected to achieve distinction in both research and service.

Lamont Research Professors receive nine-month appointments with partial salary support provided from institutional sources. An incentive program encourages the establishment of a vigorous externally funded research program to provide a majority of their salary support and includes opportunities for summer salary. The successful applicant will also be eligible to apply for additional internal sources of salary support and research funds. Applicants should have a clear vision of their intended research program, demonstrate a record of significant research contributions through publications in peer-reviewed journals; demonstrate likely or proven success in raising external funding; and be able to contribute broadly to research at Lamont.

Qualifications:

  • Eligibility requirements include a Ph.D. in Earth or Biological Sciences or a related field and at least two years of relevant research experience.
  • Candidates should provide a CV (including a list of publications and of funded projects or grant applications awaiting approval), a statement of research interests that begins with a brief statement (max 5 sentences) on the impact to the field of their top two publications, a statement of science education and outreach interests, and the names and addresses of at least three references. Evaluation of applications will continue until the position has been filled.

The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will remain open until the position is filled.

Columbia University benefits accompany this Officer of Research appointment.

Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Company

Our center has a unique standing at Columbia University.  We are one of only a few centers in the United States actively developing a global climate model to understand past and future climates both on Earth and on other planets.  To do so, we have a special relationship with NASA.  We are co-located with the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in Columbia’s Armstrong Hall. Here, Columbia and NASA scientists work closely together to advance climate science and improve societal resilience to climate-related challenges both in the United States and around the world.  CCSR scientists and staff also work with many other partners – private sector, governmental, and non-governmental organizations – to answer these challenging scientific, social, and economic questions.
