Dr. Zhen Qu’s group (https://zhenqu.wordpress.ncsu.edu/) at North Carolina State University is seeking PhD students and a postdoc. The successful candidates have the room to develop research projects on air pollution and greenhouse gases using atmospheric chemistry models, satellite observations, and data science and statistical methods.

Prospective PhD students are expected to start in Fall 2023 in the department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. We strive to match the research projects to the personality and career plans of group members. Anyone with a background and interest in atmospheric science, environmental science and engineering, remote sensing, data science, statistics, and coding is encouraged to apply. Interested students should contact Dr. Zhen Qu directly about their past experience and research interests before submitting an application to the department (https://meas.sciences.ncsu.edu/graduate/apply-to-meas/). Note that GRE scores are not required.

The start date for the postdoc position will be mutually agreed upon and can be as early as January 2023. To apply, please email Dr. Zhen Qu your CV, cover letter, unofficial transcript, and a list of 3 references. Applications received by Jan 1, 2023 will be given priority.

NC State is a great place for atmospheric chemistry research. The department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is one of the largest interdisciplinary geoscience departments. In addition to collaborations within the department, students will also have opportunities to work with other departments at NC State on environmental science and data science. Students can also take classes and work with scholars from Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill within the Research Triangle Park (RTP). RTP also has many career-related resources, e.g., the US EPA RTP campus, the Research Triangle Institute, and environmental engineering firms.

NC State is located in Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina. Raleigh is a hub for cultural attractions in North Carolina, with several state-of-the-art performance venues, museums, and art galleries. Here you will find a vibrant, eclectic mix of people from all over the US and the world. In addition, it is easy to access to nature — the Atlantic Ocean is two hours to the east, and the Blue Ridge Mountains are 3.5 hours to the west.
