The Department of Geology & Geography at West Virginia University invites applications for an open-rank, tenured or tenure-track faculty position in Geology with a specialization in subsurface energy systems starting August 11, 2023. This is a 9-month, full-time position with full benefits. Candidates with research applications to sustainability challenges of the 21st century, and candidates whose research and scholarship support WVU’s land-grant mission are encouraged to apply.

 

The Department of Geology and Geography is in the process of transitioning into a school focused on the physical and social dimensions of global sustainability. Successful candidates will be joining five other new hires in GIS, hydrogeology, and sustainability science/studies as we build out this exciting new unit. Faculty in the department secure significant external research funding, teach thousands of students, and provide service to the state, Appalachian region, and the world. The department currently supports 34 graduate teaching assistants, 36 graduate research assistants, and two graduate fellows. The department is housed in the extensively renovated Brooks Hall on the Downtown campus and owns complete suite of state-of-the-art subsurface analysis software and outstanding geospatial science teaching and research facilities, including the WV GIS Technical Center. Faculty in Geology & Geography have led several big multi-institutional research projects in Subsurface Geology involving collaborations with researchers in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Petroleum Engineering, Natural Resource Management, and Law School.  The holder of this position will be a key associate of the WVU Energy Center and have immediate opportunities to collaborate with WVU’s long-time partners at the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Lab.

 

WVU is a R1 research land grant university located within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore area. Qualifications

The successful applicant must have: 1) a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Earth Science or closely related field such as Geology, sustainable energy, or engineering by time of appointment; 2) research and teaching capabilities in one or more of the following areas: subsurface geology, geophysical or geomechanical applications to energy transition technologies, including carbon sequestration, hydrogen storage, and geothermal systems; 3) ability or potential to teach courses such as: subsurface resources for energy transition, subsurface methods, geothermal energy, petroleum geology, and graduate-level courses in area of expertise; 4) demonstrate the potential for pedagogical innovation and excellent teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels; 5) demonstrate the ability or potential to publish peer-reviewed research and secure external funding for research. The teaching load is two courses or course equivalents per semester.
