The Department of Geography & GIS are searching for multiple positions that will advance cutting-edge geospatial research and education at the University by making significant contributions to technical research, development, and operation of cyberGIS infrastructure for the CyberGIS Center, Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science, School of Earth, Society, and Environment, and NSF I-GUIDE. The positions are important and necessary to sustain the national leadership and strategic excellence of the University in cyberGIS, geospatial data science, and many related areas.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

Research Programmer

 

Contribute to the development, testing, and implementation of cutting-edge geospatial research for the CyberGIS Center, Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science, School of Earth, Society, and Environment, and NSF I-GUIDE.

 

  • Design, develop, test, and implement software programs for GIS capabilities and geospatial analytics tools based on advanced computing, data, and visualization environments Research, develop, and test scalable geospatial spatial analysis and modeling algorithms Support the research, development, and operation of cyberinfrastructure resources of the CyberGIS Center Produce code repositories, documentation, project reports, and other written materials related to geospatial software development Provide technical support, training, and guidance to faculty, staff, collaborators, and students Attend, contribute to and present at meetings, conferences, and workshops as a representative of the CyberGIS Center

Senior Research Programmer

 

Contribute to and lead research teams in the development, testing, and implementation of cutting-edge geospatial research for the CyberGIS Center, Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science, School of Earth, Society, and Environment, and NSF I-GUIDE.

 

  • Lead research teams to deliver robust geospatial programming solutions to meet the needs of diverse projects and communities Design, develop, test, and implement software programs for GIS capabilities and geospatial analytics tools based on advanced computing, data, and visualization environments Research, develop, and test scalable geospatial spatial analysis and modeling algorithms Support the research, development, and operation of cyberinfrastructure resources of the CyberGIS Center Produce code repositories, documentation, project reports, and other written materials related to geospatial software development Provide technical support, training, and guidance to faculty, staff, collaborators, and students Attend, contribute to and present at meetings, conferences, and workshops as a representative of the CyberGIS Center

Research Scientist

 

Conduct and manage research projects in the areas of cyberGIS and geospatial data science.

 

  • Conduct research, education, and development work in the areas of cyberGIS and geospatial data science Manage geospatial research projects at UIUC and across institutions Implement and test geospatial solutions on advanced cyberinfrastructure Write research papers and technical reports Assisting in developing new initiatives and proposals in the domains of advanced cyberinfrastructure, cyberGIS, geospatial data science, and related areas Attend, contribute to and present at meetings, conferences, and workshops as a representative of the CyberGIS Center

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required

 

Research Programmer

 

·       Bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering, geographic information science, geography, information sciences, or a related field.

 

·       Experience with at least two programming languages

 

·       Experience with software development on Linux

 

·       Six months of experience researching, presenting, and/or publishing technical projects or papers in a professional or academic setting.

 

Senior Research Programmer

 

·       Bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering, geographic information science, geography, information sciences, or a related field and five years of work experience as a programmer; or

 

·       Master’s degree in computer science or engineering, geographic information science, geography, information sciences, or a related field and three years of work experience as a programmer.

 

·       Experience with at least two programming languages

 

·       Experience with software development on Linux

 

·       Six months of experience researching, presenting, and/or publishing technical projects or papers in a professional or academic setting.

 

·       Five years of professional software development experience

 

Preferred Research Programmer and Senior Research Programmer

 

·       Development experience in commercial and/or open-source geospatial tools and technologies

 

·       Familiarity with web-based application development (e.g., Javascript, PHP, HTML, or REST) and geospatial JavaScript libraries (e.g., OpenLayers, ArcGIS         JavaScript API)

 

·       Experience in code management (e.g., git/svn, issue tracking, continuous integration)

 

·       Experience in parallel computing (e.g., MPI, OpenMIP) and/or data-driven programming (e.g., Hadoop, Spark)

 

·       Experience in database systems (e.g., MySQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra) and spatial databases (e.g., PostGIS)

 

·       Experience in cloud computing (e.g., OpenStack or AWS)

 

·       Experience in system programming in Linux/Unix environment

 

·       Management of virtual machines in a server setting

 

Research Scientist

 

Required:

 

·       Master’s degree in computer science or engineering, geographic information science, geography, information sciences, or a related field.

 

·       Research and development experience in geospatial information science and systems

 

·       Experience in writing research papers and technical reports

 

Preferred:

 

·       PhD degree in computer science or engineering, geographic information science, geography, information sciences, or a related field.

 

·       Research and development experience in cyberGIS and/or geospatial data science

 

·       Experience in writing research proposals

 

·       Experience in interdisciplinary research

 

·       Experience with project management

 

Successful candidates within the Research Programmer/Senior Research Programmer/ Research Scientist positions will have the following: excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills. Appointment Information

 

These positions are full-time Academic Professional appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start dates are as soon as possible after the deadline date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
