The American Geosciences Institute was founded in 1948 as a network of associations representing geoscientists with a diverse array of skills and knowledge of our planet. For over 70 years, AGI has provided information to geoscientists around the world, served as a voice of shared interests within the profession, and played a major role in strengthening geoscience education. AGI strives to increase public awareness of the vital role geosciences play in society’s use of resources, resilience to natural hazards, and the health of the environment.

 

AGI is looking for our next Director of Scholarly Information. This individual will be responsible for the oversight, management, and eventual upgrade of the GeoRef database. This individual will oversee over 30 employees within the department and be responsible for vendor relationship management. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of MLS or MLIS, knowledge of the library A&I market, demonstrated project management and budgeting experience, as well as familiarity with scientific publishers.

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

 

  • Direct content development for AGI’s bibliographic databases and dictionaries/glossaries
  • Establish and evolve data standards for AGI’s bibliographic databases
  • Oversee ongoing development, operation and implementation of database production systems, including system platform upgrade
  • Supervise ongoing GeoRef Thesaurus development and distribution
  • Explore new bibliographic database options
  • Manage production schedule for GeoRef and associated bibliographic databases
  • Negotiate and oversee contracts with Abstracting & Indexing (A&I) database vendors
  • Establish and maintain relationships with International Bibliographic Network partners
  • Develop and oversee metadata partnerships with publishers
  • Evaluate annual pricing schedule for GeoRef Develop pricing for consortium customers Initiate revisions to dictionary/glossary projects
  • Seek funding as appropriate for relevant database or product development
  • Establish and manage departmental budget and staffing
  • Supervise and assist departmental staff in executing their responsibilities
  • Coordinate production system network operation with AGI Technology Department
  • Actively participate in AGI leadership team activities
  • Provide news and updates to AGI leadership and stakeholders

Qualifications:

  • MLS or MLIS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the library A&I marketplace
  • Familiarity with scientific publishing/publishers
  • Extensive experience with metadata standards and database development
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Knowledge of application of controlled vocabularies and/or AI
  • Long-term management and supervisory experience of distributed staff
  • Strong grant writing and editing skills
  • Demonstrated public presentation skills
  • Contract and budget management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of geosciences
  • Prior experience with GeoRef database
  • Familiarity with major geoscience publications/publishers
  • Marketing and communications experience
