Department of Environmental Sciences and School of Architecture Joint Hire in Landscape Science
The Department of Environmental Sciences (EVSC) and the School of Architecture (SOA) at the University of Virginia invite applicants for an Assistant Professor in landscape science. We seek applicants whose research and teaching advance knowledge of environmental systems and address problems of societal relevance. The ideal candidate is an empirically oriented environmental scientist whose work addresses problems of regions, landscapes, or land-use patterns. This position is open to all areas of environmental sciences and will prioritize research and teaching in the ecologic, hydrologic, geologic, or atmospheric domains.
The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in the Department of Environmental Sciences and the School of Architecture and is expected to develop an externally funded and internationally recognized research program, manage and mentor a diverse research group, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses. They will take a central role that bridges and leverages research strengths between both Schools. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent by the time of appointment, a record of excellence in research, a commitment to teaching excellence, and a commitment to the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
EVSC, in the College of Arts and Sciences, was formed in 1969 and has research and teaching interests that span ecology, hydrology, geosciences, and atmospheric sciences. The School of Architecture includes Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Architectural History, and Urban and Environmental Planning, and emphasizes interdisciplinary, open, ethical research, and education that address the built environment with attention to environmental and societal challenges. In 2022, the University of Virginia launched a multi-year Grand Challenge Research Initiative in Environmental Resilience and Sustainability, with a focus on climate solutions. The University will invest $60 million in two areas: research on clean energy pathways, and research and translation to help local communities develop best practices for responding to climate change. In addition to substantial research support, the University will hire over 15 faculty across six schools, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, the McIntire School of Commerce, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the School of Data Science, and the School of Architecture.
The $10 million Climate Collaborative, led by the UVA Environmental Resilience Institute, will support large, interdisciplinary research teams in specific localities dealing with climate-related challenges. University teams will work with external partners, including policymakers, business leaders, local citizens, community groups and officials, to co-create climate adaptation and mitigation strategies that are based on cutting edge research and are actionable. Successful candidates are expected to engage with the Climate Collaborative Initiative and will have access to resources to support research and training.
