Position Overview & Research Goals:
The Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL), Carnegie Institution for Science, seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate volatile solubility in silicate melts at high pressure and temperature. The position is part of a Sloan-funded program to investigate the early atmospheres of exoplanets. AEThER: Atmospheric, Empirical, Theoretical, and Experimental Research is a multi-disciplinary project focused on creating a framework for understanding the earliest abiotic atmospheres of rocky planets by combining solid planet expertise with atmospheric expertise.
The candidate will conduct high-temperature and pressure experiments in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell to investigate the solubility of volatiles in planetary magma oceans, in direct collaboration with Drs. Anat Shahar (Carnegie), Alexander Goncharov (Carnegie), and James Badro (IPGP). Collaboration with other members of the AEThER team working on related topics is also anticipated.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completed doctoral degree in geophysics, mineral physics, planetary science, or a related field at the time of appointment.
- Extensive diamond anvil cell experience, and experience with analytical techniques such as FIB, SEM, and EPMA.
Desired qualifications:
- Experience with laser-heated diamond anvil cells is a bonus.
