Applications are being sought for two fully funded PhD Graduate Student positions conducting fundamental research at the interface of climate science and wildfire science and/or biogeochemistry and wildfire science.
The interactions between increasing fire activity, the Earth system, and society are to be explored using a mix of climate modelling, remote sensing data, in situ data, and machine learning techniques. Anyone with a background and interest in wildfire science, climate science, atmospheric or marine science, environmental science and engineering, remote sensing, data science, statistics, and/or numerical modelling is encouraged to apply.
Climate change is a universal concern; understanding how it will impact society, nature, and the health of the Earth benefits from diverse perspectives gained across all backgrounds and swaths of life. The successful candidate will
- be motivated, practically skillful, and have excellent critical thinking skills
- have a MSc degree in climate, physics, chemistry, or related field
- show strong verbal and written communication skills
- work equally well independently and as part of a diverse team
skills that would be considered an additional asset include
- background in marine biogeochemical cycles and/or wildfire science
- ability to code in a commonly used climate science language (e.g., FORTRAN, Python, R, or MatLab)
- experience in publishing within professional journals
- being familiar with processing/analyzing large datasets
Prospective PhD students will start in Fall 2023 in the department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State University. Interested students should contact Dr. Douglas Hamilton (dshamil3@ncsu.edu) directly before 31st December detailing briefly their research experience to date and where their future research interests fall before applying. Please include a current resume in initial correspondence. Historically underrepresented minority students are encouraged to apply. Note that GRE scores are not required for NC State.
Any interested students attending AGU this year are welcome to reach out and arrange a small in-person meet-up during the week.
