Job Details

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Physical Oceanography Department. This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The institution has a top-rated postdoctoral program (www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs. While the primary focus of the work will be in research, the Postdoctoral Investigator will have the opportunity to participate in educational and outreach activities associated with the project.

Online application forms should be submitted with a cover letter, complete curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation. Applications will be reviewed upon submission.

Climate Modeling on the extratropical ocean-atmosphere interaction

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites applications for a postdoctoral investigator to study large-scale extratropical ocean-atmosphere interaction with a team of scientists on various projects by Young-Oh Kwon (WHOI) and the collaborators in multiple institutions including the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The projects aim to investigate the role of ocean dynamics and ocean-to-atmosphere feedback in the large-scale extratropical atmospheric and ocean variability, using climate model experiments as well as statistical analyses of observational and reanalysis datasets. The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of this research, while primarily responsible for designing, conducting, and analyzing climate model simulations.

Qualified applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, up to three relevant publications, and contact information for at least three professional references. Initial consideration will be given to applications received before January 1, 2023, but the position will remain open until it is filled.

For further information please contact Young-Oh Kwon (yokwon@whoi.edu).

Essential Functions

Designing, conducting, and analyzing climate model experiments as well as comparing with observational and reanalysis data sets. Research on the role of ocean dynamics and ocean-to-atmosphere feedback in the large-scale extratropical atmospheric and ocean variability. Communication with the project participants from multiple institutions. Presentation of the results at national and international conferences. Publication of peer-reviewed papers based on the results.

Education & Experience

• Recent Ph.D. degree (or nearly completed) in atmospheric science, oceanography, or other relevant discipline.
• Prior experience in climate modeling, preferably with the Community Earth System Model (CESM), with ability to modify the component models to setup the planned simulations.
• Good understanding of the midlatitude atmospheric and ocean circulation and their interaction.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced preferably through publications in peer-reviewed scientific literature and presentations to a variety of audiences.

Special Requirements

WHOI has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy in effect, where you must register your full vaccination status (vaccination plus booster) in order to begin employment. The registration process is confidential and entails submitting your official vaccination records or requesting to engage in the interactive exemption process for either a medical or religious reason.

Physical Requirements

The position will be located at WHOI in Woods Hole, MA, while a remote work arrangement can be considered. WHOI has a top-rated postdoctoral program (www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs. This position is full-time and eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with a possibility of renewal for another year. Renewal of the appointment is conditional on the postdoctoral investigator making satisfactory progress during the first year. Start date is flexible with a suggested date of March 1, 2022, but the successful candidate could begin earlier. Applications from under-represented groups in geosciences are particularly encouraged.

WHOI is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer/Disabled/Veterans/M/F. We encourage Veterans and those with Disabilities to apply. Applications are reviewed confidentially. Applicants that require accommodation in the job application process are encouraged to contact us at (508) 289-2253 or email eeo@whoi.edu for assistance.
