The Division for Climate and Environmental Physics (CEP) of the Physics Institute, University of Bern invites applications for the position of

Associate or Ass. Prof. tenure track in Experimental Climate and Environmental Physics & Director of the High Altitude Research Stations Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat

 

in the field of atmospheric trace gas observations (100%)

(start date 01.02.2025)

 

The candidates will develop an internationally recognized research program in the (isotopic) study of atmospheric trace gases and changes in the related biogeochemical cycles, with a strong focus on the application and development of new analytical methods. Among others, the research topic is expected to make use of the unique research infrastructure at the high alpine research stations Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat (HFSJG).

Candidates have an outstanding track record of academic excellence in the field of atmospheric trace gas observations preferentially with a focus on their isotopic characterization, in attracting external funding and strong leadership and communication qualities. The candidates will dedicate about 50% of their time to research and education in the field of climate and environmental physics and 50% to the future development, management and representation of the high-altitude research stations. Future close collaboration is expected with the other groups at CEP working on climate and biogeochemical modeling as well as ice core trace gas observations. Active collaboration with other research groups at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Research (OCCR) is also expected.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Physics or a related field. Candidates are committed to excellence in teaching and are expected to represent the entire field of physics at the undergraduate level and the specific field of climate and environmental physics at the graduate level. Courses at the undergraduate level are taught in German and sufficient proficiency is expected after the first two years of the appointment.
