The Biogeochemistry & Environmental Quality Research Group at Clemson University, South Carolina invites applications for a research associate in wildfire biogeochemistry to begin immediately or no later than summer 2023.  The candidate will work closely with Prof. Alex Chow (https://www.clemson.edu/cafls/faculty_staff/profiles/achow) on experimental and field investigations of wildfire severity and post-fire precipitation on pyrogenic carbon biogeochemistry.

The research associate will primarily lead a recently DOE-funded project to conduct watershed-scale burning experiments at DOE Savannah River Site in South Carolina. In addition, the research associate will also have opportunity to interact with researchers at Oak Ridge National Lab and Clemson University to learn about pyrogenic organic matter characterization using NMR and FT-ICR-MS as well as reactive transport model.  This is a full-time appointment, initially for one year, and renewable up to three years, conditional on satisfactory performance. The annual base salary for this position is $48,000 plus benefits. [The average rent of a two-bedroom apartment at Clemson is about $1200 per month]

Qualifications: The applicant should have a PhD in Chemistry, Forestry, Natural Science, or Environmental Engineering.  Applicants with MSc and experiences in wildfire study or organic carbon characterization can also apply.  Interested applicants can contact Prof. Chow at achow@clemson.edu.
