Visiting Assistant Professor of Geology

Location: Walla Walla WA

Open Date: Jan 06, 2023

Deadline:

Description

Located in the historic community of Walla Walla, Whitman's beautiful tree-lined campus is home to an intellectually diverse, dynamic, and supportive community of some 500 staff and faculty serving roughly 1,500 students from the local region and across the globe. With exceptional students, accomplished faculty and staff, along with a fiercely loyal and growing number of engaged alumni, Whitman College continues to build on its national reputation for academic excellence as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country.

The Geology Department at Whitman College is seeking applicants for a one year position with strong background in Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, at the rank of visiting assistant professor (or visiting instructor if ABD) beginning August 2023. Preferably applicants will have a Ph.D. at the start of the position; ABD will be considered.

The successful candidate will offer courses in Introductory Geology (100 level), Sedimentology and Stratigraphy (200-level), and any two courses from GIS, Hydrology, Soils, and Geophysics. Our curriculum is strongly field oriented and the successful applicant will be invited to participate in our twice-yearly, 4-day Regional Geology field trip. The standard annual teaching load is five courses (labs count as 0.5 course-equivalent). The ability to mentor student research projects is encouraged.

Whitman College and the Geology Department are committed to cultivating an inclusive learning community. Applicants should be able to demonstrate their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and articulate how their classroom practices work to advance antiracism in the learning environment. This statement can be included in the cover letter or the teaching statement. In their cover letter, candidates should address their interest in working at a liberal arts college with undergraduate majors as well as non-majors.

To apply, go tohttps://whitman.bamboohr.com/jobs/. The online application will prompt you to upload all of the required materials: a letter of application; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy; and evidence of demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate instruction. The committee will solicit three letters of recommendation from applicants who reach the interview stage.

Review of applications will begin February 15, 2023 and continue until the position is filled.

Salary Range: $64,000-$67,000
