The Opportunity

The School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment is seeking a highly motivated Senior Lecturer or Lecturer to develop excellence in research and teaching in the subject area of Water Science.

We are particularly interested in approaches that inform the global water cycle and/or have applications to climate change, water resources, contamination, Indigenous water science or other scientific problems relevant to Australian and global natural environments.

Your research will be focused on improving our scientific understanding of the terrestrial water cycle at any scale, employing experimental, theoretical, observational and/or computational approaches. The following areas of research focus are desirable, though not essential: groundwater, groundwater-surface water interactions, ecohydrology, surface hydrology, fluvial geomorphology/river management, sediment transport, whole-of-system water cycle and remote sensing of surface and/or groundwater from ground, drone and satellite platforms (e.g. hyperspectral, radar, GRACE).

The successful candidate would be expected to contribute to the teaching programme in the School of Earth Atmosphere and Environment including (for example) current units on hydrogeology, water and the land, and water security.

The School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment is interdisciplinary and hosts very active groups in Atmospheric/Climate Science, Physical Geography/Environment, and Geology/Geoscience. Facilities include infrastructure to support fieldwork, world class geochemistry laboratories for elemental, stable isotope, radioisotope analysis of waters, soils and environmental materials, an environmental DNA facility, and a preparation laboratory for terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides. The School hosts the Monash Drone Discovery Platform, and has established collaborations with the National Computational Infrastructure, and the Australian Synchrotron (located adjacent to Monash Clayton). Water is a key priority and cross-cutting subject area in the School, and it is also central to the Monash Impact 2030 Strategic Plan which identifies Climate Change, Geopolitical Security and Thriving Communities as major global challenges.

The applicant should have

• A PhD in a relevant Earth Science or related discipline

• A track record (with expectations dependent on the level being applied for and relative to opportunity) of high-quality research outputs, external research income success and teaching excellence in Water Science

• The ability to bring new ideas and research avenues, building on and extending existing strengths in the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment
