Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track), Climate Prediction in Support of Solutions and Justice, Meteorology and Atmospheric Science and Institutes for Energy and the Environment

Co-Funded Meteorology and Atmospheric Science - Institutes for Energy and the Environment Faculty Hire in Climate Prediction in Support of Solutions and Climate Justice

The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science and the Institutes for Energy and the Environment at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position in climate prediction with a focus on solutions and climate justice at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek a faculty member whose research would use a state-of-the-art understanding of the earth and atmospheric sciences to advance the accuracy and precision of climate predictions. The faculty member's research would be purposefully designed to benefit vulnerable populations. Thus, while the faculty member would pursue fundamental research to improve climate predictions, the work would be guided by the needs of vulnerable populations. This hire would fill a critical gap between our traditional disciplinary expertise in atmospheric science and the overwhelming need for climate science designed to help vulnerable populations adapt to climate change. This faculty member would benefit from strong interdisciplinary links to colleagues working in fields such as adaptation strategies, engineering, economics, urban systems, decision science, ethics, geography, sociology, and political science. This collaboration would be facilitated by the university-wide Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEE), which is currently promoting interdisciplinary initiatives including climate, water and biogeochemistry, urban systems, and health and the environment, and the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences' Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI).

We seek an inspired colleague who will develop a successful externally funded interdisciplinary research program, be a committed and enthusiastic teacher and mentor of undergraduate and graduate students, contribute to enhancing department and college activities in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and become an internationally recognized scholar who serves the public and scientific communities. This position is part of a cluster hire in climate solutions. The hire will be expected to collaborate across departments and colleges. A Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a related discipline is required by the time of appointment.

Applications from women and under-represented groups are strongly encouraged.

The appointment could begin as early as July 1, 2023. Review of applicants will begin on December 15, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. Inquiries about the position may be directed to Kelly Lombardo, Search Committee Chair, at lombardopsu.edu.
