Doctoral Graduate Assistant - Geoscience Education

The School of Earth Systems and Sustainability at Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites students to apply for a doctoral Graduate Assistant (GA) position for a project on “Converging Earth Science and Sustainability Education and Experience to Prepare Next-Generation Geoscientists", funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). You must have a Master's degree prior starting this position. Through the interdisciplinary project, the doctoral GA will be trained to be a next-generation STEM educator with excellent geoscience, sustainability, and teaching skills. The selected GA is expected to have at least four years of 12-month assistantship support, assuming satisfactory progress has been made in the program.

The GA will assist the project PI/Co-PIs in student recruitment, selection, and retention, co-curricular activities planning and coordination, data collection and analyses for internal evaluation, and project communication and dissemination. The GA will be closely mentored by project PI/Co-PIs through one-to-one and group meetings, and be provided with critical resources such as technical training, conference travels, and career development.

Preferred qualifications for the GA position:

  • Master degree in Geography, Geology, Environmental Studies, or closely related discipline
  • Experience in conducting and communicating sustainability-related research (demonstrated by publications, presentations, and invited talks)
  • Experience in teaching and advising students in formal and informal learning contexts
  • Ability to work collaborative with an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
