USU is recruiting for 3-5 doctoral research assistantships starting Fall 2023 in support of the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH). These positions will focus on developing next-generation data and modeling infrastructure to support national scale hydrologic modeling conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Water Prediction (OWP).

Background:

Prospective applicants should have a background in engineering, hydrology, water resources, computer science, or a closely related field. Priority will be given to candidates with experience or strong interest in computer programming; data collection using hydrologic and water quality sensors and data logging technologies; hydrologic and flood inundation modeling; geospatial analysis and machine learning; and cyberinfrastructure development.

Specific study topic areas:

  • Advancing next-generation Hydrologic Information Systems, including efficient systems for interfacing with environmental sensors and data logging systems, implementation of standards-based web service interfaces and data encodings for sharing data, and advancing collaboration, data sharing and modeling linked to HydroShare. Contact: Dr. Jeff Horsburgh (jeff.horsburgh@usu.edu)
  • Advancing methods, algorithms, and techniques for extraction of hydrologic information from camera-based monitoring systems. Contact: Dr. Sierra Young (sierra.young@usu.edu)
  • Advancing water management-hydrologic model coupling to improve hydrologic forecasting in managed watersheds. Prior experiences in data analysis, programming, and hydrologic or water management modeling are preferred. Contact: Dr. Pin Shuai (pin.shuai@usu.edu). Advancing geospatial representation of 3D channel and hydraulic properties in large-scale hydrologic models. Contact: Dr. Belize Lane (belize.lane@usu.edu).

Application:

Interested students should email a current curriculum vitae and unofficial transcripts as soon as possible to the contact listed for the topic in which you are most interested. Please reference this opportunity in your email.

Applicants must apply for admission through the USU graduate school https://www.usu.edu/graduateschool/. The GRE exam is required for all applicants, and an English proficiency exam may be required for international applicants. The USU application deadline is March 1, 2023, but late applications can be accepted with faculty member approval.

Graduate Student Research Assistantships include a monthly stipend and full tuition support and will be awarded through the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Utah Water Research Laboratory. Based on students’ qualifications, we may waive the USU graduate school application fee, but this must be arranged prior to the application being submitted. For more information on the application process, contact the individual above associated with the topic in which you are most interested.
