The Department of Earth and Climate Sciences at Bates College invites applications for two full time, one-year Visiting Assistant Professor positions beginning August 1, 2023. Combining the two hires, the department seeks expertise in earth materials and earth surface processes.

Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized and first-generation students are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program, have a good knowledge of/experience with inclusive pedagogies, and welcome the opportunity to mentor serious students and advise senior theses. Teaching responsibilities include five courses per year, with lab sections counting as half a course. Field-based laboratory projects and collaboration with departmental colleagues offer a wide range of instructional opportunities.  The department supports the success of visiting professors through mentorship and professional development opportunities.

Maine is particularly well suited for teaching and research in glaciated, riverine, lacustrine and coastal systems, and offers access to both metamorphic and igneous terranes.  Additionally, the Bates Morse Mountain Conservation Area is 600+ acres of contiguous beach, dune, salt marsh and upland forest ecosystems offering numerous teaching and research opportunities. 

Departmental facilities include

  • The Quaternary and Sedimentology Laboratory with a Beckman Coulter Laser Particle Size Analyzer, Staff-supported use of the Environmental Geochemistry Laboratory with an EA/GC-C-IRMS and an ICP-OES,  An extensive mineral, rock, and thin-section collection, Powder X-Ray diffractometry, Rock preparation equipment, Scanning electron microscopy with EDS, and A petrographic microscope laboratory.

College wide facilities include a staff-supported Visualization Lab, Digital Media Studio, and GIS and mobile GIS capabilities.

Qualifications

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. by August 2023.
