A PhD Research Assistantship in Geophysics is open at the Department of Geological & Mining Engineering & Sciences, Michigan Technological University. This NSF sponsored project will study cavitation in fluid-filled fractures and their induced seismicity via integrated physical models of the dynamic photoelasticity technique and acoustic emission recording system. The output of this project may explain why some specific seismic signals such as long period events are observed during fracture development, which can enhance forecasting volcanic eruptions. Two relevant papers to this research can be found at:

The project will include lab-work, data processing, data inversion and data simulation. The applicants should send the following documents to Dr. Radwin Askari (raskari@mtu.edu)

  1. Curriculum Vitae,
  2. Transcripts.

The successful candidate will preferably have 1) a track record of publication in peer-reviewed international journals, 2) lab research experience, and 3) strong communication skills.

The project will start in September 2023.
