PhD or MSc position on human impacts on marine carbon

 

Human activities in the ocean, once mainly constrained to the coast, have expanded sharply since the start of the 21st century. Our pursuit of marine natural resources and the development of marine infrastructure and technology for transportation, energy, and food production have allowed human activities to reach the ocean's deepest depths. Despite growing recognition of the potential for human activities to influence marine ecosystems, our understanding of the magnitude and implications of these activities on carbon accumulation and retention in the ocean are limited.  

 

The Atwood Aquatic Ecology and Global Change  Lab at Utah State University has an opening for a Ph.D. or MSc position (https://trishaatwood.weebly.com/). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to co-design their research on one of the following research themes; 1) anthropogenic impacts on marine carbon cycling, or 2) alterations in marine carbon cycling as a result of human-induced changes in animal communities. Projects should focus on large spatial scale patterns (e.g., regional or global) and primarily use data synthesis, remotely sensed data, or models to answer their research questions. Chances to supplement data sets with fieldwork may be possible, pending student interest, available funding, and the questions studied.

 

The applicant must be able to start their position no later than Aug. 2023

 

Qualifications

 

Students applying at the Ph.D. level must have completed a Master’s degree in a relevant field before Aug. 2023

 

A bachelor's or master’s degree in ecology, data science, geographic information science, biogeochemistry, or related fields

 

Strong analytical skills (experience with R preferred)

 

Experience with geospatial analysis using ArcGIS, QGIS, R, or similar software.

 

Strong written and oral communication skills

 

Self-motivated and creative
