What Your Job Will Be Like:

Sandia’s Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Grid Modernization Center (8800) has a great opportunity for a motivated and innovative R&D Senior Manager to lead the Defense Waste Management Programs (DWMP) Group!

The DWMP Group 8880 has approximately 50 staff in three Departments. Two departments—the Performance Assessment and Decision Analysis and the Repository Performance Departments—are housed at Sandia’s Carlsbad, NM site, and a third department —Environmental Restoration and Stewardship—is based at Sandia’s Albuquerque, NM site. The successful candidate will lead the staff and first level managers at both locations.

One unique aspect of this position is that the Sr. Manager is responsible for the operations of Sandia’s Carlsbad site and the staff and contractors working there. This position has frequent interactions with DOE’s Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO), other national labs, and WIPP regulators as well as the town’s leadership. As the face of Sandia in Carlsbad, the Sr. Manager will need to reside near and work in Carlsbad, NM.

Sandia’s work in Carlsbad is important and enduring- our work on the WIPP project began in the fall of 1974 and Sandia established our office in Carlsbad in 1994. WIPP’s importance to NNSA will only increase with the new PIT production at Los Alamos National Lab since WIPP is the only repository for the nation’s defense-related nuclear waste.

The selected candidate will provide leadership and advocacy for the diverse team of about 50 scientists, engineers, technologists, postdocs, contractors, and student interns advancing the practice of nuclear waste disposal and ensuring the environmental safety and security of both locations.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Lead and provide professional development for your three direct report managers and the rest of your team

  • Provide a clear vision and strategy for the work in the Defense Waste Management Program and ensure delivery of current and future workload

  • Engage with a diverse customer base including DOE and DOD. Work with staff and peer managers to improve programs in nuclear waste disposal and environmental management

  • Cultivate a safe, secure, creative, and productive work environment for all

  • Ensure that the organization is timely in responding to internal and external customer needs, policies, and requirements; and

  • Manage laboratory facilities located in Carlsbad and Albuquerque as well as the entire Carlsbad office site

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant STEM field (engineering, geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, chemistry, math, or a closely related field) plus either a Master’s in a relevant STEM field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Eight or more years of related technical experience including implementing/leading field and laboratory experiments

  • Minimum of five years of demonstrated project leadership and/or managerial experience

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

This position requires you to reside near, and to work in, Carlsbad, New Mexico. You must also be able to travel to Albuquerque, NM or other locations frequently.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master’s or PhD in a relevant STEM field

  • Experience with nuclear waste disposal

  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external customers, including the ability to build effective working relationships

  • Demonstrated commitment to environment, safety, and health

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as demonstrated in written publications and an in-person interview

  • Experience in establishing and carrying out program and organizational strategy including experience in technical business development

  • Ability to deliver results, effectively manage and mentor staff, and guide diverse multidisciplinary teams

  • Experience working within policy-focused and politically sensitive programs including the relevant regulatory agencies

  • Understanding of the technical capabilities housed at Sandia’s primary locations in Albuquerque and Livermore, CA for reach-back capabilities
