The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for a tenure track or tenured faculty position or a professor of practice in Energy Resources. The successful candidate will be appointed as the Director of the Potential Gas Agency.

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering welcomes applications from candidates who have expertise in Energy Resources, including but not limited to expertise in applied research in the geochemistry of low and high carbon energy source rocks, risk/uncertainty of exploration and development of similar systems, multiphase flow, basin modeling, and the study of carbonates. Other areas of expertise within the general field of Energy Resources are welcome. We seek candidates who have research interests that complement existing department and university strengths, and the successful candidate is expected to develop collaborative, cross-disciplinary research at Mines that is aligned with the university’s and department’s focus on Earth, Energy & Environment.

The successful candidate will be appointed as the Director of the Potential Gas Agency (PGA, The Potential Gas Agency at Colorado School of Mines provides the Potential Gas Committee (PGC) with guidance, technical assistance, training, and administrative support, and assists in member recruitment and outreach. As an independent entity, the PGC consists of knowledgeable and highly experienced volunteer members who work in the natural gas exploration, production, transportation, and distribution industries and in the technical services and consulting sectors. The Committee, currently at 90 members, has provided geologically based assessments of U.S. technically recoverable natural gas resources biennially since 1964. The Potential Gas Agency, established at Mines in 1967, historically receives financial support from prominent exploration, production and gas pipeline companies and distributors and private individuals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in geology or a related discipline from an accredited program at the time the appointment begins
  • A record of and/or interest in excellence in teaching and mentoring, research, service, management, and leadership
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Research expertise in energy resources that complement existing department and university research programs (e.g., unconventional petroleum research, sedimentary geology research, geophysics as applied to energy systems)
  • Leadership experience to warrant appointment as the Director of the Potential Gas Agency.
  • Assistant Professor candidates must demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Associate and Full Professor candidates must have an established and currently-funded program with clear potential for continuance, and a proven track record of success in teaching, research, and service. In addition, Full Professor candidates should have an established international reputation. Evidence of externally funded research is required for an appointment with tenure.
  • Professor of Practice: distinguished accomplishments in industry with significant mentoring and extensive lecturing and teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research experience and accomplishments beyond a graduate degree program, in academia, research labs, and/or industry, as demonstrated by professional record
  • Demonstrated experience in garnering external funding in support of research
  • Demonstrated experience successfully teaching at the university level

Department Description The Department has 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 2 teaching faculty, and 9 research faculty, ~40% of whom are women and ~14% of whom identify as minorities. We also have 3 staff who support the mission of our Department. This cadre of professionals supports approximately 120 undergraduate students and 140 graduate students. The Department offers an ABET-accredited B.S. in Geological Engineering, and several M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered in the Department and through interdisciplinary programs at Mines, including Geology, Geological Engineering, Hydrologic Sciences and Engineering, Geochemistry, and Underground Construction and Tunnel Engineering. We also offer non-thesis/Professional M.S. degrees in Mineral Exploration, Geological Engineering, GIS/Geoinformatics and we offer a number of online certificate programs as well. Assistant Professor: 83,260 - 95,000
Associate Professor: 94,160 - 113,000
Professor: 116,000 - 126,100
Professor of Practice: 94,160 - 100,350
